A Coastal Zone Management (CZM) Program grant was awarded to the Grand Traverse County Road Commission and Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc. to fund a feasibility study to evaluate the possible conceptual design options for a grade separated trail crossing of South Airport Road.

Gosling Czubak, the engineering consultants hired to conduct the feasibility study, have completed the next step in the study and have developed possible crossing alternatives. A second public meeting will be held at the Garfield Township Hall (3848 Veterans Drive) at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 24, 2010. The purpose of the meeting will be to review the consultant’s findings regarding alternatives, alternatives evaluation, and concept drawings.

The trail will connect downtown Traverse City residents, pedestrians, bicyclists, and skiers to the Grand Traverse County’s athletic fields, Nature Education Reserve and the Boardman River valley. The Boardman Lake Trail may be accessed from Traverse City’s Old Town Neighborhood at the end of 10th Street (through Oryana Natural Food Coop’s parking lot) or at two trailheads that are located at Hull Park (Woodmere/Hannah Ave) and Medalie Park (off South Airport Rd near Logan’s Landing).

The 10th annual Tour de TART is just two weeks away! It’s TART’s signature event. The 19-mile, one-way bike ride from Traverse City to Suttons Bay is a family-friendly evening ride. Join us on Friday, August 13 and take a spin on our trails, enjoy a bayfront dinner and bus ride back to TC. Make plans to ride it, volunteer or do both!

Ride it—

Online registration is up and running at http://www.traversetrails.org/events/tourdetart/ We’re making this year’s ride extra special with the addition of local libations at the Suttons Bay Marina Park. The dinner will be catered by the Euro Stop Deli (we’re having local corn on the cob, Italian sausage with peppers and onions, salads, watermelon). We’ll also be having root beer floats for dessert again this year with local Wild Bill’s root beer and Cold Stone Creamery vanilla! Yum! The food stops will be catered by City Bike Shop and Brick Wheels and McLain Cycle will be helping out at the start and end of the event. So join all three bike shops and TART for the 10th Annual Tour de TART and receive a commemorative pint glass to keep. It’s sure to be a family-friendly good time.

Help out—

If you can lend a hand on the day of the event, we would be most grateful. Last year we had 76 volunteers pitch in to make the tour go smoothly and we’ll need at least that many again this year. To make things easier for you to volunteer, we’re using a volunteer website:http://www.volunteerspot.com/login/entry/78-62159969810

It’s super easy to sign up for the various volunteer opportunities. Please pam@traversetrails.org with any questions.
