Plans are underway for a long-distance bike route that would extend from Sault Ste Marie south, below the Mackinac Bridge, and then follow the Lake Michigan shoreline through Petoskey, Frankfort, and South Haven.
Eventually the proposed U.S. Bicycle Route 35 would end up in the state of Mississippi. There are no plans for improvements along the route. But Bob Otwell, Executive Director of the TART Trails in Traverse City, says bicycle routes can draw attention to the need for bike lanes, and better shoulders - or even just basic road maintenance.
