Traverse Area Recreation and Transportation (TART) Trails, Inc. and Grand Traverse County are replacing bridge decking on the TART Trail east of Traverse City. The project, a trail bridge located near Four Mile Road, began Monday morning and TART officials hope the project will be complete by Monday May 11. During the day, the trail is closed and a detour is marked. The trail is reopened each night after 5:00 p.m.
The project is managed and run by volunteers of TART Trails. Grand Traverse County is supplying the materials. The decking on the TART bridges is 15 years old and was becoming a safety and maintenance hazard. The boards were uneven and the nails were popping up. A structural engineer reviewed the substructure under the bridges and determined that the structure is sound. TART and county officials chose to replace decking on the Four Mile bridge to extend the overall lifespan of the bridges and create a safer facility. There are 5 bridges along this section of the TART Trail.
