Tour de Leelanau volunteers needed

Road Marshals Needed-“Be part of the action!”

On Sunday, May 25th the 4th annual Priority Health Tour de Leelanau bicycle road race will steam up the roads of Leelanau County. This years’ race will wind through every village in Leelanau County and substantially increase the need for road marshal volunteers. The Priority Health Tour de Leelanau will be securing over 110 miles of road with 95 road junctions as the races progress through the county. This means that we need approximately 200 road marshal volunteers and need ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET!

A road marshal’s job is to temporarily delay traffic and pedestrians from entering the road as the racers speed by. Operating under the authority of the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office and with the assistance of Leelanau County Sheriff’s deputies, National Park Service, Michigan State Police, Grand Traverse Tribal Police and the Village of Suttons Bay Police along with a crew of motorcycle marshals, the road marshals help enforce a “rolling closure” of the roads while the race passes through each area of the county. Last year we had wonderful volunteers and everything was very smooth. The racers said it was the safest race they had been in all year long! We will “train” you on how to marshal safely, give you a black event volunteer T-shirt, and you’re invited to attend the volunteer “after-glow” party with music, food and beverages-right at the finish line!

This one day classic point to point race in the tradition of European bike race is drawing spectators and racers from surrounding states, as well as Canada. The men’s start will be at 11 AM in Leland on Lake St. The women’s teams will take off from “The Village” at The Homestead. The finish for both men and women will again be in Peshawbestown at Leelanau Sands Casino’s Eagle’s Ridge Conference Center.

Please help to make sure our roads are safe for racers, spectators, and motorists alike on Sunday May 25th!

To find out more about this ultra-cool event go to your favorite bike shop and pick up a Tour Trumpet or log on to www.tourdeleelanau.com. You can volunteer right on the web site. If you have any questions about being a road marshal you can call the race office at 231/803-4259.
