TRAVERSE CITY -- There's plenty of opportunities to make your commute both smart and fun during the upcoming Smart Commute Week.
From June 1 to 5, TART Trails will encourage residents to pick alternative transportation to get around town. For participants, the payoff is a green trip and free breakfasts, yoga session, massage, awards and even a weeklong geocaching treasure hunt.
Right Brain Brewery will organize the Right Brain Cache 'N Dash to motivate commuters to ditch the car and, instead, carpool, walk or bike. Sara Klebba, the brewery's marketing and events coordinator, wants Cache 'N Dash to become an annual event.
"(It's) something simple to do, and hopefully it will get people out on the trails," she said.
Participants can use GPS coordinates or clues posted at www.rightbrainbrewery.com to find caches hidden each day on TART Trails or at the free morning breakfasts for smart commuters. Players will collect sets of numbers hidden inside the caches. At 6:30 p.m. on June 5, participants attend Right Brain's Cache Bash, where they will use the numbers to solve a word puzzle and be eligible for prizes. The brewery is located on Garland Street in Traverse City's Warehouse District.
Other smart commute events include daily free breakfasts from 7 to 9 a.m. at locations around Traverse City. The Digital Cafe, located within the CityMac store on South Airport Road, will host breakfast June 2.
"I thought it was a great way to let people know that this is a spot to use the TART Trail," said owner Linda Solem. "It's a good way to connect with the community."
Sacred Space Yoga will offer yoga during a June 3 breakfast at Hagerty Insurance, located off Cass Street in downtown Traverse City. Jenny Lintvedt said the yoga will be open to all experience levels and will focus on postures that benefit bikers.
"Yoga allows you to open your hips and strengthen your core, and all of these are very important in biking," she said.
This is the 15th year for Smart Commute Week in Traverse City. For a schedule of free breakfast events and locations visit the Web site www.traversetrails.org.
