North American Vasa 2010 North American Vasa - February 13-14This race is hosted and run by the North American Vasa Board of Directors. It is not an event of TART Trails, but the race occurs on the Vasa Pathway that we groom. The North American Vasa cross country ski race takes place on the Vasa Pathway and is held on the second Saturday in February each year. The first Vasa was held in 1977. Skiers can compete in several distances including 12K, 27K and 50K races. Each race has a Freestyle and a Classical division for the different cross country techniques. The Gran Travers Classic race is held on Sunday and features distances of 16K and 6K for Classic only technique. For more information, please go to the race website at: Vasa.org. The superb grooming by the TART Trails organization has made this exceptionally beautiful course a winter-long top destination for cross country skiers from throughout the midwest. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 - Hagerty Insurance Gran Travers Classic Race If you are seeking a low key fun but mildly competitive event this is the one for you. No big crowds to contend with and no skating racers blowing by, but rather a purely classic race reminiscent of the simpler era of cross country skiing. Wool knickers or lycra, your choice. Its perfect for introducing yourself or a friend you're mentoring to the sport of timed cross country skiing. Enjoy a scenic route through the Pere Marquette state forest with like minded individuals. The G.T. is an ideal event for a recreational skier to challenge himself or herself to try a fun race for the first time. Both loops avoid the bigger hills of the VASA course, but feature classic set-tracks custom groomed just for this event.
Hot soup, tasty snacks and camaraderie await everyone after the Sat. & Sun. races back at the lodge. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2010 at 12:00 Noon - Valentine's Day Ski Tour Wear your best red or pink outfit to maybe win a gourmet chocolate prize basket. Enjoy this relaxed untimed 6 km or 16 km tour skiing with your sweetie or maybe meet one during this event featuring apres-ski live music by T.C. Celtic around the lodge fireplace, gourmet chocolates, refreshments, and warming bonfire. Net proceeds to benefit the Munson Women's Heart Health Program. Limited ski rentals available by advance reservation from Timber Ridge Resort (1-800-909-2327), Brick Wheels, or other Traverse City ski shops. WEEKEND - GRAND CHAMPIONS TO WIN NEW RACING SKIS NEW TWO-DAY STAGE RACING AWARD The North American VASA introduces two-day stage racing to the midwest ski scene. In addition to the usual trophies for Saturday's VASA race, and Sunday's Hagerty Insurance Gran Travers race something new and exciting is planned for 2010. The well rounded racer with the best both-days combined time for these select races goes home with a valuable new pair of racing skis from these award sponsors along with the trophy for winning:
Reminiscent of the Tour de France yellow jersey rider having to defend his title each day. All skiers registering for the above described qualifying races are automatically entered for Grand Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at no extra charge. There are separate male and female categories but no separate age divisions for this award.
