David Kirby, Solar System, 2004
Solar System is a distance-to-scale model of our solar system that spans from Hull Park in Traverse City to Bunker Hill Road in Acme. Comprised of light poles generously contributed by Traverse City Light and Power and ten 3-foot fiberglass spheres, Solar System also includes informational placards next to each installation. Each sphere was hand paint by David Kirby, along with volunteers.
About the Artist
A native of Michigan, David Kirby is an artist and physics teacher at Traverse City West Senior High. The Solar System project was born out of a conversation he had in 2001 with his students.
